Mossadiq Umedaly, Stanford Ovshinsky and Ener-G-Rotors receive Cleantech Awards in San Francisco

Distinguished leaders and companies in clean technology recognized at Cleantech Forum XXI

SAN FRANCISCO, February 25, 2009 — The Cleantech Group, LLC, founders of the cleantech investment category, today named the winners of its Cleantech Awards in the categories of Entrepreneur of the Year, Cleantech Pioneer and Most Promising Technology in front of an audience of 900 industry influencers at Cleantech Forum® XXI in San Francisco.

Mossadiq Umedaly, chairman of BC Hydro was awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year award for his serial entrepreneurial leadership and taking numerous clean tech companies public. Umedaly has enjoyed a long prestigious career in the energy sector and continues to shape the way the industry is evolving today. Prior to BC Hydro, Umedaly was chairman of Xantrex Technology Inc., a world leading advanced power electronics company, and previously was vice president and CFO of fuel cell pioneer Ballard Power Systems.

Stanford Ovshinski, chairman & CEO, Ovshinsky Innovation LLC and founder of Energy Conversion Devices was awarded the Cleantech Pioneer award. Ovshinski is an American inventor and scientist who has been granted approximately 400 patents over the last fifty years, mostly in the areas of energy or information. Many of his inventions have come to play central roles in modern society, including the environmentally friendly nickel–metal–hydride battery, continuous web multi–junction flexible thin–film solar energy panels, flat screen liquid crystal displays, rewritable CD and DVD computer memories, hydrogen fuel cells and nonvolatile phase–change electronic memories. Throughout his life, his love for science and his social convictions have been the primary engines for his inventive work.

Ener–G–Rotors Inc. was presented with the award for Most Promising Technology, which was accepted by Michael Newell, CEO. Ener–G–Rotors is commercializing devices that turn low temperature heat into electricity, opening up new markets in waste heat, solar thermal and geothermal installations. The company's patented technology is intended to change the solar thermal and geothermal marketplaces by allowing smaller scale production of electricity at low temperatures. The New York–based company also claims to have a payback schedule of two years in most cases.

The Cleantech Awards are the longest–running, most prestigious honors in the clean technology sector.
