Cleantech Group expands global reach to India; Vinod Khosla to chair advisory board
Jaswinder Kaur to lead Cleantech Group's India expansion SAN FRANCISCO, February 26, 2008 -- Building on its success in North America, Europe and China, the Cleantech Group™, LLC today announced expansion into the high-growth Indian market with new in-country operations, a market report, "Cleantech India Venture Capital and Private Equity Investment," and the first annual Cleantech Forum® India to be held October 2008. Leading venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, will serve as Chair and Jaswinder Kaur, executive director of the Indian Venture Capital Association in Delhi, has been named Country Director. Cleantech venture capital and private equity investment in India increased about 58% between 2006 and 2007. In 2007, investors placed USD 210 million as compared to USD 133 million placed in 2006. The momentum is expected to continue through the coming years. The USD 190 million that was invested in Q4 2007 represents a 171% percent increase from the amount invested in Q4 of 2006. "India's rapid economic development and nascent manufacturing sector, combined with environmental and technological factors, have positioned the country to become a clean technology hub of innovation," said Vinod Khosla, managing partner of Khosla Ventures and Chair, Cleantech India Advisory Board. "I look forward to working with the Cleantech Group and its extensive network to help India emerge as a global leader, both as a consumer and exporter of clean technology products and services." The Cleantech Group is also pleased to announce that venture capital veteran Jaswinder Kaur, has been appointed Country Director for India. Ms. Kaur has more than 15 years of business and operational experience with technology companies including Nortel Networks and Newbridge. In 2000 she was a founding partner at Venture Coaches, an early stage fund focused on the IT sector and remains a venture partner in the Canadian Cleantech Fund. A founding Charter member of TiE (Ottawa, Canada) and professor at the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University, she will lead in-country operations for Cleantech India. Founding members of the Cleantech Group's India initiative include Ernst & Young, Global Environmental Fund, Heller Ehrman, Jefferies, 3i, Credit Suisse, Consensus Business Group, IDFC Private Equity, Nishith Desai & Associates, Sequoia, SUN Group and Nexus Capital India. Cleantech India's board advisors are: Nexus, SUN Group and IDFC Private Equity.
