Agenda

Scaling Cleantech Markets: Driving Job & Value Creation, Evolutionary Design and New Global Supply Chains

Over September 15-17, 2008, more than 600 of the world’s leading investors at the forefront of the cleantech investment category—representing over $3 trillion in capital—together with entrepreneurs, scientists and policy-makers, will convene in Washington, DC for Cleantech Forum XVIII.

As we move toward the conclusion of the first decade of the 21st Century, stresses on the global economy from rising inflation and slowing growth in the developed economies will be compounded by the tangible impacts of climate change. Clean technologies hold the promise of addressing these challenges, and doing so by generating superior returns along with job and wealth creation.

From 2001 to 2007, the cleantech investment category expanded by an average of over 50% per year and despite growing headwinds in the global economy, continues to expand and appears poised for continued strong growth into the 2nd decade of the 21st Century.

Cleantech Forum XVIII is one in a series of five of the world’s annual premier investment intelligence platforms occurring across North America, Europe, China and India, providing insight, investment opportunities and unparalleled networking for the world's leading investors, growth companies, policy-makers, scientists and enterprises.

Investment and business leaders will join with leading policy-makers to take concrete steps to scale cleantech markets, increase capital flows and break-down barriers to rapid market adoption.

Join us in shaping the rapidly emerging cleantech category at the world’s premier cleantech investment platform, providing unparalleled definition, analysis, networking, deal flow and thought leadership. Join with your peers in what has emerged to be the most significant economic opportunity of the 21st Century; the "Clean Industrial Revolution".

11:00am – 12:00pm Panel Discussions: First Session

Track A: Importance of Project Finance in Cleantech: Reaching Utility-Scale Solutions

Though Cleantech garnered over $5 billion of venture capital in the US and Europe last year and $2 billion in Q208 alone, it is a fraction of the estimated billions of total investment to date in the global cleantech economy the majority of that capital coming from governments, institutional investors and others involved in infrastructure development. Given the utility-scale solutions necessary for true systemic change, the use of project finance as an investment tool is critical to success as rarely can a single entity fund an entire project. This discussion will convene leaders from all sides of the project finance table to delve into the investment opportunities and challenges, the regulatory landscape and the future of project finance domestically and internationally.

Speakers:
Claire Broido Johnson, Senior Advisor, Hannon Armstrong
Lynn Tabernacki, Senior Manager - Renewable Energy and Environmental Finance, Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC)
Ron Flax-Davidson, Vice President – Development, CH Energy Group
Walter A. (Tony) Maull, Jr., Cleantech Market Leader - Mid Atlantic, Ernst & Young

Moderator: Frederick Jenney, Partner, Morrison & Foerster LLP

Sponsored by Morrison & Foerster LLP

Track B: Smart Grids: Rapidly Evolving Opportunities
America’s leading utilities are evolving to meet the demands raised by increasing distributed generation, intermittent renewable power, and reduced base load capacity. This panel will discuss their experiences with modernization of electricity distribution systems and the challenges they face to provide robust, secure, efficient, profitable and intelligent systems. Panelists will discuss current projects at two of the country’s leading utilities, new technologies entering the marketplace to facilitate these demands, and legal challenges raised by these new technologies.

Speakers:
David Mohler, Vice President and CTO, Duke Energy
Steven Pullins, President and CEO, Horizon Energy Group
Tim Healy, CEO, EnerNOC, Inc.
Suedeen G. Kelly, Commissioner, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

12:20pm – 1:15pm Panel Discussions: Second Session

Track A: Policy Drivers Needed to Accelerate Technology Deployment

What are the policy drivers that have allowed technologies to be successfully deployed internationally and what are the lessons learned? What policies would allow successful deployment of clean technologies in North America? Where should the finance industry provide support to create legislation that will support deployment of technologies? What are the pitfalls to look for when making investments that are tied into policies? What opportunities are at the forefront if there are successful policy implementations?
