Contract awarded for large pressurized ultrafiltration drinking water plant

October 25, 2006 - by Dallas Kachan, Cleantech Group

Pall Corporation (NYSE: PLL) has been awarded a $15.8 million contract by Minneapolis Water Works to provide a membrane water treatment system for the citys Fridley membrane filtration plant.

Fridley will be the largest pressurized ultrafiltration (UF) plant in North America, with a capacity of 95 million gallons of water per day. The Pall Aria system will be used to provide a reliable supply of safe drinking water to businesses and residents of the city of Minneapolis and surrounding areas.

Minneapolis draws its drinking water from the Mississippi River. This poses challenges due to rapid changes in water quality and variations in turbidity, temperature and contamination. To overcome them, the city turned to membrane ultrafiltration, one of the most advanced technologies available to cost-effectively provide the highest quality drinking water. Minneapolis Water Works completed extensive performance testing of competing ultrafiltration membrane pilot scale systems in June.

In addition to the $6 billion municipal water market, filtration technology is increasingly becoming a critical step in treating water for a wide range of industrial applications. This includes intake and process water for food, beverage, chemical, oil, gas, power, semiconductor production and other applications. Membrane technology helps businesses conserve and reuse water, and to restore wastewater to environmentally safe levels before discharge.
