Santa Rosa, Calif.-based electric vehicle maker ZAP (OTC: ZAAP) and its Jinhua, China, joint venture partner Youngman Automotive Group said today they initiated a request for quotation process for their highway-speed three-wheeler.
The companies said they expect to start production of the vehicle, dubbed the Alias, in the second quarter of 2009.
ZAP and Youngman said they're looking for engineering and technology groups from around the world that are interested in participating in the project.
"The performance goals are attainable because the pace of new technology is accelerating," said Steve Schneider, CEO of ZAP.
The two-passenger Alias is set reach 100 miles per hour, have a 150-mile range, and a targeted price of $30,000.
"We have worked with Lotus Engineering during the initial phase of the development project and shall again be looking forward to their support," said Schneider.
The companies also plan to offer options like fast charging and a hybrid range extender.
Los Angeles-based Venture Vehicles is also working on a three-wheeled vehicle, raising $6 million in funding from NGEN Partners in August for its concept (see If you tilt it, they will come).
In November, Dubai's Al Yousuf Group invested $5 million in ZAP (see Dubai's Al Yousuf Group invests in ZAP).
Al Yousuf Group's subsidiary Al Yousuf Motors is a distributor of automobiles, off-road vehicles and boats.
