Velux to sell solar water heaters in U.S.

February 5, 2008 - by David Ehrlich, Cleantech Group

Horsholm, Denmark-based Velux said today it would start selling its solar water heater system in the U.S.

The company said the system, which it already sells in Europe, includes two to three rooftop solar collector panels with an 80 to 120 gallon hot water holding tanks.

Velux said its heaters can operate throughout the year, producing hot water even when it's cold outside.

"We us a glycol, or antifreeze solution in our system," said Jim Cika, manager of solar products for Velux, "so it's suitable for use anywhere in the United States, with the exception of some parts of Alaska, which is not the case with all solar water heating systems."

The company said the heating systems can be integrated seamlessly with its flagship line of skylights.

Velux said homes with the solar heaters could get an average of 80 percent of their hot water needs from the system.

The company anticipated a payback period of three to seven years for the solar heater in most areas depending on geographic location, utility rates and other factors.

"Solar water heating is another opportunity for individual homeowners to support the green movement in our country while realizing benefits now and for years to come," said Tim Miller, president of Velux America.
