TransAlta Corporation (TSX: TA) (NYSE: TAC) announced today that it will design, build and operate a 66 megawatt wind power project in southern Alberta, Canada.
The project’s capital cost is estimated at $155 million CDN.
"Wind power is a key resource for meeting the demand for competitively priced, and environmentally sustainable electricity in the Alberta market," said TransAlta's president and CEO Steve Snyder.
"Blue Trail supports TransAlta's drive toward capitalizing on growth opportunities in our core western markets,” he added.
The Blue Trail wind farm is expected to begin operating next year following delivery of 90V wind turbines. The company projects it can generate an average of 195,000 MWh of electricity per year from the site, which could power 29,000 homes.
TransAlta was previously awarded power purchase agreements to provide wind power to New Brunswick (see TransAlta building wind farm in New Brunswick and TransAlta increases Canadian wind farm plan).
TransAlta also owns and/or operates the Castle River, Kent Hills, McBride Lake and Summerview wind farms in southern Alberta.
The addition of the Blue Trail wind power project brings TransAlta's total net wind-generated capacity to 314 MW.
