Hydrogenics to supply fuel cell bus projects

November 7, 2006 - by Dallas Kachan, Cleantech Group

Canadian-based hydrogen and fuel cell developer Hydrogenics Corporation has announced that it will be supplying fuel cell systems for two fuel cell bus projects in the U.S.

The company said that it will be the official supplier of its HyPM fuel cell power modules to a project run by the Center for Transport and the Environment (CTE) in Atlanta, Georgia, which aims to build, test and demonstrate a hybrid fuel cell bus in the city.

Hydrogenics' technology will also be used in a second similar fuel cell bus project run by Weststart Calstart in San Francisco.

Both schemes are to receive funding from the US Federal Transit Administration, totaling an estimated $11 million (£5.8 million).

Commenting on the supply deal, Hydrogenics president and chief executive Pierre Rivard said that he believed the company's technology to be well suited to the projects.

"[The] HyPM fuel cell power module product has proven itself many times over in a range of configurations… environmentally and operationally," he said.

"Through projects like this we continue to explore and expand pre-commercial opportunities for HyPM products in parallel to our focused market efforts in material handling and backup power markets."
