A car fueled solely by water, with zero carbon emissions?
If you think it sounds like it's too good to be true, you're not alone.
After last week’s introduction of its new fuel cell Water Energy System (WES), Japan-based Genepax Co. appears to be soft-pedaling its claims of a breakthrough fuel cell that uses water and air.
Cleantech Group caught up with the company this week, and learned it is facing “criticism and non-supporters,” and that as more coverage appears highlighting the technology, the more it runs into “non-supporters criticizing us.”
“We understand these criticisms since we cannot [reveal] the core part of this invention,” said Jun Onishi, company spokesperson.
Onishi went on to explain that the company is currently working with a “legal third party” to gather “factual data of [the] generator” and anticipates announcing the results soon.
Genepax, with great fanfare, showed media last week a small vehicle with an energy generator that the company claimed extracts hydrogen from water poured into the car's tank. The generator was said to release electrons that produce electric power to run the car.
Onishi did not give a timeframe for when the public will have more data points regarding the technology, but did state the company expects information to be updated “within the next weeks.”
According to Genepax, the system generates power by supplying water and air to the fuel and air electrodes, and because the new system does not use methanol as fuel, this new system does not emit carbon.
According to the company, any kind of water can be used as an acceptable form of fuel for the system—including rain, river, sea or even tea water.
Genepax said the design of its system is similar to the basic power generation of a traditional fuel cell, except Genepax’s system uses a membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which contains a material capable of breaking down water into hydrogen and oxygen through chemical reaction.
The company was reluctant to reveal details about its system, but maintains that it is “a well-known process to produce hydrogen from water to the MEA.”
With the new process, the company said the cell only requires water and air, eliminating the need for hydrogen components such as a reformer and high-pressure tank.
The company also said that since the MEA doesn’t require catalysts, the amount of rare metals such as platinum is almost the same as existing systems.
Genepax was unable to say how long this system would last, as it has been collecting data from its prototype for about a year and it plans to continue gathering information.
One system runs approximately ¥2,000,000 (or about $18,700—not including the car), but the company claims that if it can get it into mass production that could be cut to ¥500,000 or less (or just under $5,000).
Onishi told Cleantech Group that the company has secured partners to assist in mass production of the product, but was reluctant to name names or a timeframe.
The news comes at a time when news regarding fuel cell research dollars and technology improvements is a plenty.
Globally, governments, corporations and investors continue to earmark money for fuel cell research. Just this week, Honda Motor (NYSE: HMC) introduced its new FXC Clarity as an answer to Toyota Motor's (NYSE: TM) improved fuel cell hybrid (see Honda starts production of fuel cell car and Toyota boosts range of fuel cell hybrid).
Last month the U.S. Department of Energy put $130 million toward researching more advanced fuel cell technology, and the European Union committed €470 million for a joint project to make the technologies available by 2020 (see U.S. DOE to put $130M into advanced fuel cells and Europe speeds fuel cell, hydrogen production).

Submitted on June 19th, 2008 by Dave L (not verified)You MUST put energy into water to split it into hydrogen and oxygen (e.g. electricity from a battery: the well-known process of electrolysis) which could then be run through the fuel cell to produce...electricity. The first law of thermodynamics allows no system whereby you can get more energy out than you put in, in fact you'd inevitably waste some as heat, so why would you put a fuel cell in between your power source (e.g. battery) and the motor? It'd be a lot more efficient to just run the car off of the battery, not to mention saving the expense of a fuel cell, and the weight penalty of lugging it and the water around.
If water is the only source of power, you could run the exhaust pipe into the fuel tank and run forever without refueling - another perpetual motion machine in hi-tech guise; undoubtedly a scam.

Submitted on June 24th, 2008 by here's a thought (not verified)if it does infact work as explained and no thermodynamic laws are magically deffied then the material that separates the hydrogen from the water is probably used up. meaning if it used magnesium (as an example) then it would need to have its magnesium membrane replaced after a certain time. therefore it might be that the water nor the air are the fuel but rather the membrane. like saying a steam engine runs on water when really it runs on coal ...
Let try this for those old laws, that needs updating...

(not verified)The Law of Conservation of Energy is undoubtedly correct when it shows that more energy cannot be taken out of any system than is put into that system. However, that does not mean that we cannot get more energy out of a system than we put into it. A crude example is a solar panel in sunlight. We get electrical power out of the panel but we do not put the sunlight into the panel - the sunlight arrives on its own. This example is simple as we can see the sunlight reaching the solar panel.
If, instead of the solar panel, we had a device which absorbs some of the energy which Quantum Mechanics observes and gives out, say, electrical power, would that be so different? Most people say "yes! - it is impossible!" but this reaction is based on the fact that we cannot see this sea of energy. Should we say that a TV set cannot possibly work because we cannot see a television transmission signal?

Do you want to see a quick resolution to the energy crisis?
The public should boycott from purchasing any vehicle that is less than 100 mpg.
That is surely to grab the automobile industry attention worldwide to produce an energy efficient car that does 100 mpg or better on alternative energy – the vehicle must be pollution free.
“The ‘big three’ is not the ‘big three’ anymore,†Iacocca told National Public Radio, referring to the falling sales of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. “[They] didn’t adapt quickly enough to the energy problem in this country [and were] not ready with the right kind of cars.â€
Any big corporation that is too bureaucratic and cumbersome to quickly react to changing market conditions is doomed to failure.
In today’s fast moving market conditions and technology – you must be innovative, utilize the cutting edge of technology and produce a quality and economical product.
The public has a short memory, all they care is what have you done for me lately.

Clearly the membrane
Submitted on June 24th, 2008 by BlueHorde (not verified)Clearly the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) uses something akin to well known metal hydrides to separate hydrogen from water in the 'generation' step of the power cycle.
In other words, this is really just an electric battery technology that uses water in an open loop rather than closed loop chemical cycle. The equivalent of metal hydride in the MEA gets consumed in the reaction, and I'll bet dollars to donuts that the the MEA gets 'reformed' overnight by being plugged into the electrical grid, or worse case, is removed and replaced with a factory 'reprocessed' MEA at very very regular intervals.
This car doesn't run on water, it runs on the 'secret' material in the MEA - probably metal hydride.

The fossil fuel industry has been a boon

The ramifications of the damage done by staying at the party too long are drastic if we don't open our minds to newer better technologies. We must open our minds to ALL new possibilities & solutions. I am always suspect of naysayers, who deride new systems, always questioning their motives.
Do they work for corporate America?
Do they work for the current energy providing companies?
Is this an attempt at negative propaganda by the coal, oil, nuclear, farming, hydrogen cell, auto manufacturing lobbies to block a budding technology that could derail the obscene gravy train they currently ride?
Are we facing an energy paradigm shift as drastic as introduction of steam locomotives, or that of trading animal 'horsepower' for mechanical?
This is hardly the first article dealing with the water powered car. Do a Google search and you will find several other inventors, some valid & some likely shysters.
For those ingrained in the restricting belief of the laws of thermodynamics I would point out gravity is still considered just a never completely proven theory.
How many of you are aware India will offer a mass produced car in the next 1-2 years that runs on compressed air only? Google air car, but let's take it even a step farther & cover the surface of the cars with solar panels so the sun's energy compresses more fuel while you are driving (or parked even). Can you imagine driving coast to coast and NEVER having to stop to refuel?
The possibilities are almost unlimited when we: 1) Recognize a detrimental problem; 2) Apply existing technologies to the problem; 3) Eliminate impediments to implementing solutions; 4) Free ourselves to think outside the box.
We must also realize "Rome wasn't built in a day, but it got built". Unfortunately, it appears we have a very pressing time constraint of climate change looming, and an associated threat of consuming the existing resources necessary to evolve to renewable, sustainable, non-polluting systems for ALL humans rather than just a fortunate select few.
Open your minds, free yourselves from restricting religious, technical, corporate dogma, and let's get busy. Relegate the shills, naysayers, and obstructionists to the back of the bus, or hope just becomes another four letter insult to our species.

BMW has a prototype car that uses a thermoelectric generator (TEG), that replaces the alternator. They estimate a 5% fuel savings under real driving conditions.
Electric Water Vehicle Hybrid!

Using oxyhydrogen, generated via the vehicles batteries and/or capacitors, to burn in a heating device, that powers thermoelectric modules, also called thermoelectric generators (TEG), that charges the electrical storage system. The water exhaust would be captured and put back into the oxyhydrogen device. Linear electrical generator shock absorbers could also add electrical charging capacity. No fossil fuel would be required, only water to convert to oxyhydrogen.
