CLP Holdings plans 114MW Indian wind farm

October 10, 2008 - by Massie Santos Ballon, Cleantech Group

Hong Kong-based CLP Holdings (OTC: CLPHY), one of the largest electricity investors and operators in Asia, has announced plans to build a 113.6-megawatt wind farm in India with the Mumbai-based subsidiary of Aurich, Germany’s Enercon Gmbh.

CLP manages over 30,000 MW in total installed generating capacity from coal, hydro, nuclear and wind in the Asia-Pacific region.

Within the last year, CLP’s Hong Kong arm signed contracts with London-based Nviro Cleantech (AIM: NVR) to work on coal and biomass treatment technology for India, as well as a deal with Germany’s REpower Systems to build a 150-MW wind farm in China. (see India, CLP to develop coal and biomass treatment and REpower to build 150MW wind farm in China.

CLP Wind Farms India and Enercon are expected to begin construction on the new $160 million Andhra Lake wind farm in the western Indian state of Maharashtra at the end of next year, with a projected start-up date of July 2010.

Over 140 wind turbines, each a capacity of 800 kilowatts, are to be installed.

This is the fourth wind project collaboration between CLP and Enercon. The Andhra Lake wind farm follows a 50.4-MW Khandke wind farm developed also in Maharashtra, a 100.8-MW wind farm in Gujarat and a 82.4-MW project in Karanatake.

Considered a wind farm hub, Maharashtra is estimated to have a wind energy potential of 4,584 MW. At the end of 2007, the state had a total installed capacity of 1,488 MW.

The Mahrashtra Energy Development Agency plans to add 600 MW of wind capacity annually over five years, with a target total installed capacity of 4,100 MW by the end of 2012. Mumbai-based Bharat Petroleum previously announced plans to build 10MW of windmills in the Maharashtra and Rajasthan regions. (see $480M Indian refinery signals jatropha shift).
