Hydrogenics scores two deals to sell fuel cells in Europe

July 28, 2009 - by Emma Ritch, Cleantech Group

Mississauga, Ontario's Hydrogenics (Nasdaq: HYGS) said today it signed two supply deals in Europe that it expects to begin fulfilling later this year.

Hydrogenics makes hydrogen generation and fuel cell products for customers in the energy, transportation and other industries. Both European deals are for fuel cells as primary and backup power at renewable energy generation projects.

Hydrogenics plans to deliver HyPM Rack stationary systems to national energy company Nukissiorfiit in Nuuk, Greenland. The project is expected to analyze the potential of using hydrogen for energy storage and management in Greenland.

The same systems are to be used to supplement the energy produced by photovoltaic and wind systems at a project in Nantes, France. The systems are to be installed at the new energy-independent headquarters of the Abalone Group, a human resources consulting firm.

Both projects are expected to use electrolyzers in future phases to store renewable energy in the form of hydrogen.

Hydrogenics' technology also has applications in transit buses and forklifts. The company previously worked with Pasadena, Calif.-based Calstart on a $24 million program to test out new and existing fuel cell technologies on transit buses (see Calstart starts up fuel cell bus projects), as well as with Mobile Energy Solutions, of Golden, Colo., on a  fuel cell hybrid-electric bus (see New bus a milestone fuel cell vehicle). In 2007, Hydrogenics began work with fork lift maker NACCO Materials Handling Group to develop fuel cell power packs (see Ontario putting cash into cleantech).

Shares of the company were up nearly 2 percent to close at $0.52 today.
