One thing to consider is that by tapping into the Bakken reserve, we not only lessen our dependence on foreign oil, but we provide funding for research and development for clean fuels.
For example, in the last legislative session, North Dakota created a renewable energy council to help develop areas like biomass energy production. There are also several efforts being made to increase our wind energy production and transmission so we can share our energy with the rest of the nation.
But in order to do those things, we need money to get started. Right now a significant portion of our surplus money is coming from the oil rigs in the Bakken formation.
Another legislative session is coming up in 2009. I'm almost certain there will be more clean energy R&D efforts that will be brought up as initiatives because the state may actually be able to help pay for them...thanks to our oil production.
