I always thought that the fundamental energy requirement for desalination was the entropy of mixing (or rather unmixing in this case). While moderate efficiency gains in the ancillary aspects of the process can be achieved by varying the details the unmixing is carried out, that does not change the fundamental thermodymics of the entropy of unmixing - RT Ln a1/a2.
