Interactive BriefingPacific Ballroom 2Interactive Briefing: Alternative Protein and the Future of Food Security
China has identified alt-protein as being vital to securing its future food security; even President Xi Jinping referenced the need to expand beyond traditional animal protein sources with plant-based, cell-cultured, and fermented analogs. But with different food traditions, consumer expectations, and economic conditions in the Western markets where alt-protein experienced its earliest growth, Chinese innovators must chart a path of their own.

Panel SessionPacific Ballroom 3Reimagining the Electric Grid: Grid Management
Power generation is quickly decarbonizing through adoption of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, however, this transition is putting tremendous pressure on the electric grid which is faced with insufficient transmission capacity and intermittency. On the demand side, the electrification of transportation and industrial process heat are fueling the demand for more clean power. This in turn is exposing the vulnerabilities of the distribution grid’s reliability and controls.
Panelists will discuss:
- Supply side challenges to deliver clean energy to end users and the role of innovation.
- How grid operators can prepare for the rapid increase in demand for electricity that is expected.
- The challenges and opportunities for utilities and grid operators from the rise of the prosumer with mass adoption of distributed energy resources like rooftop solar and battery storage.
- The role of the mobility sector in providing grid and demand side management services.
- How startups can play a role in this conservative industry.

Panel SessionPacific Ballroom 3Adaptation in Asia: Fighting Against Rising Sea Levels
Asia will be one of the worst hit regions by climate change with many countries already being affected. Rising sea levels are eroding arable land in low-elevation coastal zones posing a severe risk for food insecurity and exports. As a result, a large portion of public spending is dedicated to adaptation, and although data on private spending is poor, there are signs that this will increase, particularly with mandatory global disclosures on climate risk exposure.
Join our diverse panel of speakers as they offer perspective and insight on different adaptation and resilience options for the region:
- Climate Risk Analytics: Sensors and software to assess risk exposure and provide early warnings to extreme weather events.
- Climate Resilience: Risk analytics and resilient infrastructure (e.g., sea walls, drought resilient crops).

Interactive BriefingPacific Ballroom 2Interactive Briefing: Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES)
The US dominates grid scale energy storage today, but Asia Pacific will be the top market soon and likely remain there throughout the next few decades. Long duration battery storage has been the top option for most Asian installations, with lithium ion still the predominant technology but also use of flow batteries. In certain pockets of Asia Pacific, promising new thermal storage projects are coming online as well, which could serve as templates for the rest of the region. The Research Manager from Cleantech Group will discuss these projects and what the future may hold, including:
- The supply gaps in renewable power creating demand pull for long-duration storage.
- How innovation is breaking open long-duration storage opportunities through improvements to efficiency, capacity, and cost.
- The “where” and “when” of new innovations – the geographic and end-use dynamics associated with deployment of the newest innovation.

Interactive BriefingPacific Ballroom 2Interactive Briefing: EV Batteries
The global transition from gas and diesel-powered transportation to EVs will require a massive increase in battery production. Lithium-ion batteries, the most common in EVs, have become increasingly efficient and cost-effective in the past decade, facilitating the dropping cost and improved range of EVs. However, in the face of supply chain challenges and volatile materials costs, innovation in battery chemistry, manufacturing, and materials-use promise lighter, less expensive, and more powerful batteries. This briefing will explore novel EV battery types and applications, as well as challenges, market milestones, and key players in Asia.
