PoloExecutive Summit: Innovations for Living with Climate Change: Adaptation and Resiliency is on the Rise
Mitigation has dominated our 20-year old cleantech innovation theme. Long may that continue. However, as we experience what living in a 1.2 degrees world is like, we all know that, however impressively and fast the mitigation solutions develop and scale, we have a number of further tenths of a degrees rise to go before a possible peak. We think it is time for us to share with you, and you with each other, what we have been observing over the last 1-2 years, in terms of innovations that are about adapting and making us more prepared and resilient for what is to come. Both through this pre-event and in parts of the two-day Forum program to come, we will shine some light on Adaptation and Resilience, alongside our continued interest in Mitigation.
This pre-event, Executive Summit will have a limited number of places. Contact forums@cleantech.com to request your place.

Panel SessionCelebrity Ballroom DAvoiding Falling Off a Cliff With the Coal-To-Nuclear Transition
There are 2,200 Gigawatts of coal plants operating in the world today. This capacity must all be decommissioned by 2050 if we are to have any hope of achieving net zero. When coal plants are decommissioned, the communities where they operate face devastating consequences. But there is another way… Coal furnaces can be replaced by advanced high-temperature nuclear reactors. This will allow the rest of the facility to be salvaged, the labor force to continue to be employed, the community to have access to clean, low-cost, reliable energy, and trillions of dollars in capital infrastructure to be spared from becoming stranded assets. Various government agencies around the world have taken a keen interest in this idea, including the U.S. Department of Energy. This panel will explore the technical, economic and environmental justice aspects of the Coal-To-Nuclear transition.

Jessica Lovering
Co-Founder & Executive Director, Good Energy Collective Speaker bioJessica Lovering
Before starting a PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Colorado Boulder, Jessica (she/her) lived and worked in Alaska helping fight wildfires. Spending her free time backpacking around Alaska and Western Canada, she was struck for the first time by the tangible impacts of climate change: record summer heat, melting permafrost, retreating glaciers. Realizing her passion lay in solving problems down here on earth, Jessica switched into a graduate program focused on environmental policy, with a focus on energy. Although her coursework focused broadly on renewable energy, Jessica was struck by the lack of coverage of nuclear power considering it made up such a large share of global clean energy. To remedy this curriculum gap, Jessica developed and co-taught a graduate seminar looking at nuclear power from an interdisciplinary lens.
Around this time, the Breakthrough Institute was looking to expand their expertise in nuclear energy and hired Jessica when she graduated to focus on nuclear policy as part of their Energy & Climate program. From 2012–2019, Jessica developed expertise in advanced nuclear technologies and nuclear economics. She also developed policies to accelerate nuclear innovation and commercialization of new designs. In 2015 she became Director of Breakthrough’s energy program, and expanded her scope to look at decarbonization and energy policy more broadly.
Wanting to deepen her understanding of nuclear policy, Jessica returned to graduate school in 2017 to complete a PhD at Carnegie Mellon University in Engineering and Public Policy. Her research focuses on how commercial nuclear trade affects international security standards and how very small nuclear reactors could be deployed at the community level. She is also a Fellow with the Energy for Growth Hub, looking at how advanced nuclear can be deployed in emerging economies.

Jessica supported the close of the Series B round and the go-to-market strategy for global Top 100 cleantech company, Axine Water and was part of the founding team of Evoke Innovations, a fund that raised $100 million from oil and gas companies to invest in early stage cleantech. She began her career in government, where she was responsible for some of North America’s first legislation and stakeholder engagement on emissions reporting and trading, carbon taxes and offsets.

Corinex is transforming electric grids into resilient smart energy networks. As global decarbonization initiatives accelerate, legislators and utilities are enabling prosumers to generate and supply electricity from renewable sources, thereby changing the way electricity is generated and distributed. This new form of decentralized electricity generation causes variable power quality and unpredictable surges. Corinex provides utility companies with a suite of hardware and software solutions that enables high-speed and secure connectivity, monitoring, and IOT management over utilities’ existing powerline infrastructure. Corinex is the sole provider of broadband-powerline (BPL) solutions in mass rollout. Its solutions are developed for energy companies, including electric utilities, EV manufacturers, and EV charging providers. The company’s flagship offering consists of GridValue and EnergyGrid, a complete product and software solution that integrates distributed energy devices and provides real-time energy data, analytics, and predictive models. The Corinex solution has been validated by global utilities with some of the most stringent technology requirements, and it is the first company to resolve BPL’s technological challenges, enabling its mass adoption as a market leader after a decade-long technology race with incumbent players. The company is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, with a presence in Slovakia and China.
