Overview
After celebrating a highly memorable 10th anniversary of Cleantech Forum Europe in Stockholm in 2014, we are delighted to return to Sweden’s capital and major European startup hub for our 15th edition – mark your calendars for May 21-23, 2019!
This annual gathering of the European innovation community offers a wide-ranging, three-day program along with exclusive opportunities to network, learn, and get deals done. Since 2002, Cleantech Group has brought together clean technology’s most influential leaders – corporate executives, startup and growth company CEOs, investors, government agencies, and other players – from across all areas of resource innovation, from the major industrial verticals, and from across the globe.
What to Expect
Our Cleantech Forums give you a glimpse of the future, get you out of your everyday silos, provide a different perspective, and help you find innovations of relevance to you that are in adjacent or altogether different industrial and technology areas. We convene the game-changers from multiple sectors all in one place for three days, from 25+ countries, and from over 100 cities worldwide. Our 17-year history of Cleantech Forums speaks to the importance of our events in getting deals done (or started), and the feedback we receive from attendees each year highlights the unique opportunities found at our Forums.

Innovations for Noble and Impactful Goals: The Best is Yet to Come
Welcome to our 15th Cleantech Forum Europe, our Crystal Anniversary!
In February 2019, one of Europe’s leading next-generation energy companies, sonnen, was acquired by Shell – an event I recently likened to “our Netscape moment.” In 2014, the company, known then as sonnenbatterie, made our Global Cleantech 100 list for the first time. sonnen’s CEO will be with us this May to look back at their story, and look forward to where things may head in the next chapter.
In 2014, we marked our 10th Cleantech Forum Europe with a report entitled Looking Forward, Looking Back: the Best is Yet to Come in which the argument was made as to why our sustainable innovation theme looked well set for the 10 years. We also had the privilege of holding our annual Awards Dinner in City Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquet is held each year.
Five years on, we are back in Stockholm, this time to mark our Crystal Anniversary. This year’s Awards Dinner will take place in an old Nobel factory, and our Investor Dinner will be at the Nobel Prize Museum.
Throughout the Forum, we’ll take a critical look at how that best is coming on, and identify who and what will be part of the next wave of innovations that have both noble and impactful potential to transition global industries to a more digitized, de-carbonized and resource-efficient future.
We’ll also showcase more than 50 emerging innovative companies with noble aims from Europe and beyond that are looking for capital and industrial partners.
Our agenda can be seen below. It will be updated regularly – check back frequently for new speakers.

MasshallenWelcome to our 15th Cleantech Forum Europe - Where the Best Have Always Come!
Our opening morning plenary will include three elements, starting with Exponential Roadmaps: The Big Picture Realities of What Industrial Transformations Need to be Achieved in the 2020’s. The Exponential Climate Action Roadmap was launched at September’s Global Climate Action Summit in California by Christina Figueres and Johan Rockstrom. The roadmap outlines the global economic transformation required by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement on climate, to halve carbon emissions across that decade (a halving which needs to be repeated in the 2030s and 2040s too). The work is both fundamentally alarming and optimistic. Its central conclusion is that it can be done, the solutions exist, that certain industrial sectors are already on the necessary exponential pathway, while others are linear laggards, and need to get their act together (fast). The key findings most relevant to this audience – namely, the pathways the different industrial sectors need to be on to make their contribution to the path to Paris – will be presented to us.
Next, Cleantech Group will provide its annual “lay of the land,” incorporating the trends and organizations to keep an eye on, in the months and years ahead. It will also revisit the 10th anniversary report, Looking Back, Looking Forward: The Best is Yet to Come, with some critical assessment of whether and how that best is now emerging.
Finally, on his return to the location of his first ever appearance at a Cleantech Forum (in 2014), sonnen’s CEO will be with us to look back at their story, and to look forward to where things may head in the next chapter.

Masshallen & Lilla HallenNetworking Break (Fika)
During the networking break, consider taking your coffee at one of the 30-minute Meet the Analyst roundtables, on the topics shown below.
From this point on, the majority of the Forum’s programming will take place in parallel tracks, offering you a wider variety of subjects to choose from and continuing our well-received Interaction Track. Wherever you see the label Interaction Track, expect the format of these sessions to be deliberately informal, intimate and interactive. That means smaller groups (think 20-30 people), with no microphones or monitors and powerpoint-free. You are here to listen and talk to each other!
-
MasshallenMeet the Analysts
Four of Cleantech Group’s analysts will be at specified and marked roundtables in the plenary area during the networking break, ready to talk to you, and with you, about a topic each they have been researching of late. Places at each table (max. 10-12 people) will be available on a first come, first served basis. Here are the four analysts and their table topics:
- Cassidy Shell on Urban Air Mobility
- Chris Sworder on Alternative Proteins
- Josh Gilbert on Geospatial Monitoring
- Louis Brasington on Edge Computing and Utilities

RiddarsalenThe Future of Carbon: Utilization or Sequestration or Both?
Our 2019 Global Cleantech 100 featured a record number (5) of carbon-to-value companies, a signal that the utilization of carbon as a future growth market is gaining traction and momentum as we head toward the 2020s. However, given the scale of the carbon issue, there are plenty of the persuasion that converting it to fuels, chemicals or concrete isn’t going to deal with the global CO2 challenge, and that we will still need to sequester and store as well. This session will give voice to this debate.

GallerietApproaches to Assess and Measure Impact
Most investors in our space are pursuing a double bottom line. While the financial bottom line can easily be measured in multiples and IRR, the impact bottom line is much harder to grasp. In the last few years, responding to increased public awareness, limited partners have pushed investors to get better at quantifying their impact. This session will highlight three approaches to do that: measuring a portfolio’s direct impact, pursuing ESG goals and Mission Innovation’s Framework for Assessing Avoided Emissions. Companies and investors should expect to get a better sense of these frameworks, how to implement them and in which circumstances they can be useful.

MasshallenMobility for the 2020s: A Progress Report from the Frontlines
As exciting as the promise of next-generation mobility is, significant hurdles toward making it a reality remain. For all the amounts invested, the unit numbers on the road today of what 2030 mobility might look like are small.
It is the interplay of autonomy, electrification, fleetification and TaaS (transport-as-a-service), underpinned by connectivity and systemic safety that would, as is well-argued in ReThinkX’s Rethinking Transportation 2020-2030, bring forward truly disruptive economics and resource efficiencies to transportation. But, arguably, this vision of the future is only as strong as its weakest, or its slowest-moving, part since the power of the disruption is in the combination and convergence of all these factors.
This final plenary session of the day will feature two European Global Cleantech 100 companies to provide their perspectives on the current deployment frontlines, how fast the industry is evolving, and what challenges remain to be solved.

MasshallenCorporates and Startups: What are the roots of, and the routes to, more successful engagements?
We consider successful corporate engagement with startups a key success factor in the mission to transition industries to a more digitized, de-carbonized and resource-efficient future. For that to happen, corporations need to both educate innovation ecosystems like ours on the relevant industry value chains and the issues they are trying to solve, and to take efficient and impactful actions through strategic partnerships and collaborations to accelerate the commercialization of the relevant startups.
This opening session of our final day will look at these questions in the company of both corporations and accelerators who work closely with corporate partners.

RiddarsalenReforming an Age-Old Industry: How Sustainable Chemistry is Enabling a Circular Economy
The 20th century chemicals industry developed dozens of fossil-based materials that formed the foundation of our current linear economy, a system that consumes the resource equivalent of 1.6 earths annually and threatens to pollute the environment beyond repair. The push towards a circular economy has ushered in a new mandate for the chemicals industry – to develop new materials, processes and business models that will enable an economy fit for the 21st century and beyond. With the help of top innovators and investors in the field, we will look to understand how this transformation is taking place, and at what speed. In particular, we will look to understand the different possible loops to develop to make chemistry circular.

Fast fashion – mass-produced, inexpensive, throwaway clothing – is damaging the environment and the workers who make it. Textile dyeing is the second largest polluter of clean water globally (after agriculture), and reams of un-recyclable materials are being discarded in landfill. However, innovation in textiles, factories, and supply chain practices are emerging to offer viable alternatives to the make-use-dispose model of fashion. How to Get to Stockholm / The Venue
Air Travel
There are many daily direct flights to Stockholm from major cities across the world.
Do note that there are at least 3 airports that might be described by airlines (especially Ryanair) as Stockholm Airport. Arlanda is the main airport, and the one most travelers will likely use. Bromma, Skavsta and Västerås are the others in the Stockholm region.
From the airport to the venue or Hilton Stockholm Slussen
When you arrive at the Stockholm Arlanda Airport, take the Arlanda Express train to Stockholm Central Station.
The Arlanda Express is the fastest (20 minutes) and our recommended option for either single travelers or in traffic rush hours. It costs SEK 295 one way and SEK 570 for a round trip (approximately €28-30 or € 55-57). You can then catch a taxi at the Stockholm Central Station, and in 5-10 minutes you will be at the Hilton Stockholm Slussen Hotel or at the venue, Münchenbryggeriet.
A fixed price taxi from the airport would likely cost about twice as much (between SEK 450-500 one way), so it could be a good option if you are sharing. Do note that prices charged by taxis in Stockholm are NOT regulated and so prices charged per km can vary a lot. We would advise only getting in a taxi where you know the fixed price to/from airport or, in the city, whose highest unit price is between, say SEK 290 – 390. You can see this on a very visible yellow label, usually on the rear door window, before entering the vehicle (see here for photo and more information).
Uber does operate in Stockholm, but do not expect significant price differences, as all ride-hailing cars are taxi-registered cars.
By bus to the venue and Hilton
You can also take the Flygbussarna bus shuttle from the airport to Stockholm City Terminal. Change to the red subway line towards Norsborg or Fruängen. Get off at Mariatorget. Take the Torkel Knutssonsgatan and Polishuset exit. As you exit the subway station, make a right down Torkel Knutssonsgatan and follow the street about 400 meters to the Brewery Conference Centre, located at Torkel Knutssonsgatan 2 on your left-hand side.

Sofie Allert
CEO, Swedish Algae Factory Speaker bioSofie Allert
Sofie Allert is the co-founder and CEO of Swedish Algae Factory. She has a Bachelor degree in Biotechnology and a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Business design from Chalmers University of Technology. Swedish Algae Factory was founded because of her passion for making use of a natural resource that can create a lot of sustainable value for society, algae. Swedish Algae Factory have developed a circular economic business model around a group of algae called diatoms.
The organic biomass of diatoms is surrounded by a nanoporous silica shell. This silica shell has naturally exceptional light-altering and absorbent properties that are useful in several industries, where the material can replace harmful and/or less efficient chemical substances. These unique properties can e.g. be used for efficiency enhancement of solar panels, improvement of battery capacity, UV light protection in sunscreens and paint and absorption and moisturizing in skincare products. Swedish Algae Factory are today operating an algae cultivation facility in Kungshamn, Sweden, where algae is cultivated whilst absorbing the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater released from a land-based fish farm. The nutrients are trapped in the organic biomass of the algae. This organic biomass is a by-product after extraction of the algae shells and can e.g. be utilized to produce more sustainable feed or fertilizers.

Athan Fox
Chief Technology & Innovation Officer, Aurelius Environmental Speaker bioAthan Fox
Imagine a world without waste. Our aim is to revolutionise recycling; our vision is a web of industries where one stream’s waste is another stream’s in-feed: bridging linear and wasteful processes to create a circular, energy-efficient, non-polluting, zero-waste economy.
We are working on a range of projects across the Technology Readiness scale. These projects include the recycling of lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries, spent catalysts (from the petrochemicals industry), spent tyres and municipal waste. Our objective is to convert waste products into raw materials and reagents capable of treating / recycling other waste products. This synergy will help us create an Eco City where nothing but waste enters and nothing but products leave.
Our flagship technology is a green process for recycling lead-acid battery paste. We reduce the carbon footprint by 80-89%; eliminate noxious gases (e.g. sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide) at no extra cost; we cut energy by more than 7,000 mWh per 10,000 tonnes of battery scrap throughput; we reduce slag by at least 90%; and we save more than $500,000 per 10,000 tonnes throughput. Batteries produced from our recycled lead oxide exhibit higher energy density and improved cycling compared to current batteries on the market.
Dr Athan Fox is a PhD graduate in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge and Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Aurelius Environmental.

Rob Sunderland studied Physics at the University of Warwick. Upon graduating he spent the next seven years working for multinational technology companies including QinetiQ, EADS and Airbus. In 2010 he made the life-changing decision to leave a regular salary behind and he started his own business, Digital Engineering. In many ways he has continued his education at Digital Engineering, learning about all the disciplines required to run a successful business.
As Managing Director, he sets the strategic direction for the business and manages both the sales and technical teams. From 2010 until 2015, the company expanded significantly, providing services to the growing UK renewables industry. Political changes, which saw big cuts made to subsidies in this area, caused a slow-down in the renewables industry and forced a major change in strategy at Digital Engineering.
From 2016, Digital Engineering has focused on supplying services to the wider energy industry. It quickly became clear that this change was actually very positive for the business as it opened a larger, more lucrative market for the company’s services. In the past 3 years the business has won contracts with major multinationals such as Bloomberg and National Grid and is currently working in Europe, America and Australia.
At work, Rob enjoys doing things differently and is constantly looking to solve problems in new and creative ways. He is passionate about growing his business and is excited to take it to the next level.
Outside of work he loves to travel, keep fit and watch Manchester United. He enjoys listening to music and playing the piano.
