Agenda
Welcome to the Chaos of the 2020s: Urgent Actions, Unusual Strategies, Unexpected Allies
Our 2020 Forum theme Welcome to the Chaos of the 2020s: Urgent Actions, Unusual Strategies, Unexpected Allies will highlight what is occurring in response to the somewhat abnormal and chaotic next decade ahead (compared to the 2010s).
By 2030, we have the inconvenient challenge of needing to have halved carbon emissions globally, and we are clearly not on track. Meanwhile, societal forces are gathering in strength year on year to push brands, employers, elected governments, etc. into doing a whole lot more at pace.
Read moreAll of this has us thinking that orderliness and the normal pace of things might go out the window, and corporations will have to struggle with the need to do more faster and adopt different strategies (where survival over growth might become the predominant imperative for a while). Part of adopting different strategies and transforming industries will also require different thinking and new business relationships.
Join us for Cleantech Forum San Francisco, and come ready to discuss new and innovative solutions to our pressing climate crisis.

Metropolitan BallroomChanging the Rules of the Game for the 2020s: Ditching Dogma and De-Rigging the System
As we hit the 2020s, our last shot at staying within reasonable global temperature rises, we’re excited to have with us Bertrand Piccard, explorer, pioneer and Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation. His 2016 Round-The-World Solar Flight, which itself followed his completing the first non-stop circumnavigation of the world in a balloon, was only the first phase in his vision.
The second phase explains why he is here. The Solar Impulse Foundation is currently selecting #1000 SOLUTIONS that can protect the environment in a profitable way. Bertrand will then go around the world again to deliver these solutions to governments, corporations and institutions to demonstrate to them that more ambitious policies and more rapid action programs are possible. The solutions exist. The demand-side is the problem.
Read moreBelieving that way more needs to be done by policy to grip the climate emergency (and its inherent opportunities) and to tilt the balance of the playing fields, to accelerate the adoption of sustainable and transformative innovations, Cleantech Group is committed to do what it can to help Bertrand and the Solar Impulse Foundation’s mission. Nothing could be more beneficial for this innovation community than people with the right access loudly and unapologetically lobbying for fast change to the rules of the game, and pushing back on the powerful forces at play, who are casting doubts and slowing change down.

Metropolitan BallroomWelcome to the Chaos of the 2020s: Urgent Actions, Unusual Strategies, Unexpected Allies
We think it would be fair to say our theme is in good health, certainly compared to a few years back, and that, all things being equal and normal, we’d be justified to expect tailwinds to bring more progress and success over the coming decade, were it not for one inconvenient issue. It’s 2020 and we see no reason to expect anything other than a totally abnormal decade. By 2030, the world faces the inconvenient challenge of needing to have halved carbon emissions globally, and we are clearly not on track. They continue to rise.
Read moreWe will introduce our overall Forum theme and provide some examples of the urgent actions, unusual strategies and unexpected allies we might see in the 2020s. We are expecting (and indeed hoping for) a totally abnormal and chaotic decade. If it isn’t, we will surely have achieved systemic lock-in to climate suicide, and attention and capital will shift from mitigation solutions to adaptation (some of which will be featured in the pre-event Climate Resiliency Summit).
2-3 guest speakers will join the discussion to provide their own take on the 2020s, on both what could and should happen.

Metropolitan BallroomTime to be Inclusive and Pragmatic Before It’s Too Late: Advanced nuclear technologies must be a significant part of the solution set
At this Forum in 2010, we recognized the good work and leadership of the Ecopragmatist, Stewart Brand, with an award. Ahead of his time, he was then explaining why, to solve the challenges we have of rising energy demand with a need for radical decarbonization at scale, nuclear had to be part of the solution set – including the newer, innovative versions that promise a revolution in economics and industrial utility for nuclear energy.

Olympic RoomLunch Session: Power-to-X: Storing renewable energy by converting power into X (gas, fuels, chemicals, or other products)
Power-to-X is an emerging topic of interest across the energy industry used to reference technologies that create new opportunities for the use, conversion, and storage of surplus electric power. As renewable generation continues to grow worldwide, more and more areas face constraints in effectively placing power generated into the hands of consumers due to lack of load growth, transmission constraints, or mere over-supply. As such, Power-to-X markets have emerged, with technologies utilizing power to create fuels, chemicals, gas, and other products. In many cases, renewable power in Power-to-X, creates a carbon free replacement for existing feedstocks in a range of processes.
In this one hour lunch workshop, a panel of individuals from a variety of industries will share their viewpoint of the Power-to-X field, and what exciting technologies have emerged in recent years

Bertrand Piccard
Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation Speaker bioBertrand Piccard
Born into a family of scientific explorers, Bertrand Piccard has made history by completing two round-the-world flights: non-stop in a balloon and more recently without any fuel in the Solar Impulse airplane.
With this last achievement, Bertrand’s goal was to demonstrate how clean technologies and renewable energy can achieve the impossible. As a second phase of his vision, and with the Solar Impulse Foundation, he launched the challenge of selecting 1’000 profitable solutions that protect the environment in order to encourage decision-makers to adopt more ambitious environmental targets and energy policies.
One of the first to envision ecology through the lens of profitability, he urges for the uptake of clean and efficient technologies because they are logical rather than just ecological. Even if climate change didn’t exist, they would make sense, as they represent the biggest industrial market of the century. According to him, innovation and pioneering spirit are key to solve the most pressing challenge of our times: ensuring the quality of life on Earth.

Amrit Robbins
CEO & Co-Founder, Axiom Exergy Speaker bioAmrit Robbins
Amrit and Anthony Diamond co-founded Axiom Exergy in 2014 to commercialize a cost-effective, active power management solution for buildings with large thermal loads. They believe that the last remaining barrier to a renewable energy future is not cheaper solar panels, cheaper wind turbines, or cheaper electric vehicles – instead, it is solving the grid volatility that these new technologies create. They developed the Axiom platform to unlock flexibility in existing thermal systems and manage it intelligently to help mitigate grid volatility (at the building level). As Axiom’s CEO, Amrit developed the company’s product market-fit, helped build a world-class team, co-led early technology development, sold the first pilots to Amazon/Whole Foods and Walmart, helped develop a sales pipeline of over $30MM with multiple national cold chain companies, and led Axiom Exergy through multiple rounds of fundraising. He was included in Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list in 2017.
Prior to Axiom, Amrit worked for three years at Clark Energy Group (CEG), where he co-led the sales, development, and engineering of a $100MM energy efficiency retrofit project for a national supermarket chain. The project included a broad set of energy and water upgrades in 74 supermarkets, but it could not effectively address the single-largest portion of the supermarkets’ energy bills: refrigeration. Amrit ultimately left CEG to solve this painful problem. While at CEG, he also co-led the development of a $13MM energy efficiency project, helped craft the go-to-market strategy for new market verticals, and helped to grow the company’s sales pipeline by over $80MM.
Amrit earned his B.S. in Atmosphere/Energy Engineering at Stanford University. He has relevant domain experience in sales, project management, business development, and engineering. He is a Certified Energy Manager (Association of Energy Engineers) and a jazz/reggae/funk/salsa trumpet player.

Read moreNuScale Power is developing a new modular light water reactor to supply reliable and abundant carbon-free nuclear energy. Our groundbreaking small modular reactor (SMR) design features a fully fabricated NuScale Power Module™ capable of generating 60 MW of electricity using a safer, smaller, scalable version of pressurized water reactor technology.
NuScale’s SMR technology performs as clean as wind and solar, and cleaner than any fossil fuel. It is ideally suited across diverse platforms including base load electricity, load-following support for renewables, very high-reliability micro-grids, and process heat or steam for district heating, desalination, and other industrial uses. Adaptable to changing consumer demand and resilient to changing weather conditions, NuScale SMRs are the perfect companion to renewables that face intermittent generation capability.
A NuScale power plant can house up to 12 SMRs for a total facility output of up to 720 megawatts (gross). The SMR design is scalable, allowing customers to incrementally increase facility output to match demand. It is also flexible, providing significant opportunities to reduce the financial commitments and overall production costs normally associated with giga-watt size nuclear facilities, including the amount of required staff because of the SMR’s unparalleled safety features.
At NuScale, our commitment to safety is second to none. Smarter, more cost-effective, and simplified, our advanced SMR design eliminates two-thirds of previously required safety systems and components found in today’s large reactors. This Triple Crown For Nuclear Plant Safety™ design safely shuts down and self-cools, indefinitely with no operator action, no AC or DC power, and no additional water. It is the first self-protecting reactor.
At NuScale, we’re improving the quality of life for people everywhere by providing clean, abundant, and reliable carbon-free nuclear energy. Each and every day, we’re changing the power that changes the world. Won’t you join us?
