Cleantech Group for Foundations & Nonprofits
Foundations and nonprofits are pivotal in advancing cleantech and tackling its challenges through philanthropic and funding initiatives. We assist in prioritizing cleantech innovators and technologies for funding, while we also identify key areas of interest among their supporters.
Case Studies
Background
Breakthrough Energy is a global network of climate leaders committed to accelerating the world’s journey to a clean energy future.
Working with a world-class network of innovators, investors, industry leaders, and policymakers, Breakthrough Energy accelerates the innovation of climate technologies at every stage – from discovery to development to deployment.
Strategic engagement & impact
Cleantech Group is honored to partner and collaborate with Breakthrough Energy in the following ways:
1. Breakthrough Energy supports Cleantech for Europe, the initiative bridging the gap between European cleantech and policy leaders. Launched in 2021, Cleantech for Europe represents the trailblazers developing, deploying and investing in clean technologies across the EU. Breakthrough Energy also supports Europe’s wider cleantech movement, including regional initiatives such as Cleantech for France, Cleantech for Iberia, Cleantech for Italy, and Cleantech for UK.
2. Cleantech Group supports Breakthrough Energy Fellows to help accelerate their discovery of, and engagement with, the diverse landscape of regional cleantech innovation ecosystems all over the world.
3. Cleantech Group supports the Breakthrough Energy Catalyst program, which is funding large demonstration projects and invests in first-of-a-kind commercial-scale projects that use key emerging climate technologies. Cleantech Group has supported the team by landscaping sectoral opportunity sets of potential interest.
Background
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is a specialized agency of the UN with a unique mandate to promote, dynamize and accelerate industrial development.
Strategic engagement & impact
UNIDO’s Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP), supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), promotes cleantech innovation and entrepreneurship in emerging markets and developing economies to address climate challenges and foster low-carbon development. GCIP is currently operational in 19 countries.
Cleantech Group has been engaged to deliver the ecosystem-strengthening component of GCIP. To date, three knowledge products benchmarking global best practices have been published in partnership with UNIDO in cleantech policy strategy, cleantech cluster development, and cleantech stakeholder engagement. We are currently working with 8 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to develop cleantech policy recommendations tailored to local contexts. A public Cleantech Innovation Index, showcasing their cleantech ecosystems of the 8 countries, will be launched at COP29.
