Paddy Fields and Pipelines: What Aramco’s Investment in Mitti Labs Says About the Future of O&G

Mitti Labs just raised $9.5M in a Series A led by Aramco Ventures, Saudi Aramco’s venture arm, bringing its total funding to $12.5M. The Bengaluru- and New York-based startup helps rice farmers cut water use and methane emissions using a platform that combines satellite radar imagery, AI, and field operations.

Rice is normally grown under continuous flooding, which is both extremely water-intensive and a major source of agricultural methane. Mitti gets farmers to switch to alternative wetting and drying instead, which the company says cuts water use by about 40% and methane emissions by more than 50%, without hurting yield. To make that switch verifiable at scale, it built what it calls a GeoAI platform: synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery fused with years of ground-truth field data, creating a digital twin of each field that tracks moisture, flooding, and crop condition remotely. It has grown from about 8,000 farmers in its first season to more than 100,000 this season, with a goal of reaching millions by 2030, with most fields averaging around one hectare.
